This topic has been un-sticky by Davex at 1-8-2008 06:33.

To flamingmonkey

Oh, it seems like your are the embassador from UK.
'Saying and Doing is a different thing, don't you know?'

Don't you read our statement?
We are against western media biased reports, Not western people.....of course, definately not British people.......
Unlike BBC always wrote 'anti-Chinese'..........not 'anti-Chinese government'........

As we said you welcome to China.
I have plenty of British friends and colleague will go to see the game.

Well once again Jigong you seem to be utterly unable to accept any idea that is not congruent with your own.
to quickly discuss some of your points:-
in  Australia there was no violence directed towards the torch relay and the Chinese students bused in totally over reacted. IN Australia we considered and supported the Dalai Lamas request for peace. The only violence was from Chinese student against people who hold a different view to their. That is very allowable in our country. Also there was no violence towards the torch here because the Australian government refused to let the Chinese secret service who ran alongside the torch in the other countries (the ones in the blue and white tracksuits) from performing any security at all. They were told that 2 may be available in case there was a problem with the flame being relight, but if they participated in any security matter they would be arrested and charged. The Australian supporters of Tibet appreciated that but I must criticize the Australian police for not preventing the Chinese students being violent.
Lastly many Australians (I cannot speak for all western democracies) could not understand why the torch had to go around the world. It is your party and it should only have gone from Greece to China. By the way... I hope the Olympics are a wonderful experience for all Chinese to enjoy. I know that when the Sydney Olympics were on Sydney was a wonderful place to live. We mixed freely with many people from other countries. NO restrictions and no limitations by Sydney people. It was a wonderful party atmosphere.
May all sentient beings be healthy
May all sentient beings be happy

At this time I will not be posting anything further (even in response to any post about me), in light of the tragedy that has occurred in South Western China. The Chinese people and Government at this time of crisis should be supported by all the world. As far as I can see the Government have acted quickly and with courage. The PLA and others are doing a great job in terrible circumstances. It is heart breaking to see this happening again. And then there is Burma!!!
Now is not the time to criticize but rather to stand shoulder to shoulder with China and hope the tragedy is limited.
It is at times like this that the fragility of human existence is emphasized. All life is impermanent... we sometimes forget that!
I can only say that I feel a heart felt compassion for the people who have suffered and are continuing to suffer. may their suffering be minimal.
I say this with Metta.
May all sentient beings be spared from further suffering
Goodbye guys and good luck.

I've been reading this after seeing the attacks on the news, and while I agree that Americans usually don't think about their actions, but its not just Americans behind these protests.  The way our media has shown the treatment of Tibet, people are expected to react this way.

But not all Western people want this to happen.

The Olympics are about world unity, and friendly competition, and I believe that anyone using them just to send home a point should be left to the mercy of Chinese people.

However, these actions that we are being shown are of equal importance.  Many people of the world, wether it be the U.S., France, or Australia, believe that all people should have the same amount of choice and treatment.  Actions in the past may say otherwise, but I wasn't in charge of that.

Basically, what I believe is that Tibet people should be treated the same as Chinese, or all the protesters can just shut up and watch the games.  (Preferably both)

I do not hate anyone. I am not against the Chinese people. They have every right to & should by all means participate in the Olympic games. What I do oppose is a corrupt government such as China hosting the 2008 summer games.

They are a corrupt, communistic & atheistic government that wishes to dictate to & subjugate their people. This means No freedom of speech, No freedom of religion, No cultural identity. It means persecution for attempting to attain these things. This corrupt government is & has been trying to eradicate the Tibetan culture for nearly 50 years now, through horrifically barbaric & grossly inhuman ways. They overtook this country & began to pillage it's abundant natural resources to help support their own overburdened population.

Absolutely NO Olympic games should be held in such a country. It is like spitting in the face of the very spirit of the modern games. I positively refuse to watch one single second of any Olympic games held in a country where people are treated less than animals.

Therefore, I say shame on the Olympic Committee for giving the summer games to China. Shame on the world for ignoring such atrocities as have befallen the Tibetan peoples for so long. Shame! Shame! Shame!

I stopped reading at the first lines. I already knwo the article is baised after reading two wrong facts about Reporters Without Borders (RWB).

RWB is not right-wing. It's really a left-wing organization. To illustrate this, you can take their president Robert Ménard. He used to be an arnarchist, then became a communist and finally a member of the socialist party. Former French president Mitterant (socialist) vouched for him when he was charged for his demonstrations to free radio waves.

RWB gets less than 4% of it's money from the french government. It's an independent organization. Most of their funding comes from selling those olympics t-shirt with the handcuffs, selling an annual picture book and donations... The French government does not neccessarily appreciate all the critics made by the organization about France (but you know in a democracy you can criticize the government without going to Jail). You could read the critics made about the French police in their annual report (but of course the website is blocked in China hahaha).
