Red Cliff Movie
I wonder if anyone's going to watch it when the movie comes out. I think they planned the movie to come out in the same year as the Olympics. I for one had waited for years for this movie, considering I'm a big history fan.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDqamjm8lc4

-Samtom Actually, I kind of liked some of the 2008 American movies such as Iron Man or Kung Fu Panda, which seems pretty good. But Red Cliff is definitely something I'm looking forward to. Yes, people will see it. John Woo's (Wu Yusen's) first film after returning to China? His first take on ancient China since his very, very early years? Oh yeah.
I saw a bit of a documentary on the making of the film on CCTV. It was really special because they showed an action scene being directed by Woo in real time as the documentary was broadcast live.
I don't know when it's really coming out. On imdb.com it's listed as having a 10 July 2008 release date in China, but that's coming up fast and I'm not seeing the usual preliminary hype that would precede a release like this. I'm guessing they're behind on the post-production. The production supposedly has had some troubles.
It's a great pity that he couldn't work with his usual leading man, Chow Yun-fat (Zhou Renfa, in Mandarin) because of scheduling problems. The replacement lead, (Tony) Leung Chiu Wai, isn't bad. Also it stars (Vicky) Wei Zhao from Shaolin Soccer.
The YouTube trailer you linked to has been pulled, but there another "Red Cliff Special Trailer" clip to look at. Thrilling!
It's based on a story from the Chinese novel San Guo (Three Kingdoms), considered by Chinese to be one of the nation's 4 classic novels.
Woo left Hong Kong for Hollywood as HK reunification was approaching, because he was afraid the CCP's administration would cramp his style.
But now he's left Hollywood to return to China. He said Hollywood was more restrictive to his creativity than China! I wish I could find that quote, it was priceless! :lol
Red Cliff released in about a week

Update from China: it is being released here July 10. I saw a trailer for it yesterday when I saw "Kung Fu Panda" in a cinema.
I don't have information about its international release. I'd be very surprised if it wasn't also released internationally this summer. Then keep is posted Shaomaike on further developments. I have high expectations for Red Cliff.

For you, dear Samtom, I will be happy to oblige.
Here in China (and other parts of Asia) it's being released in two parts (like Tarantino's Kill Bill).
Sorry Western friends, the film won't be released to you until 2009. It must have a full running time of 3+ hours, so the producers are probably figuring out how to cut its running time. Its being edited down for international theaters probably won't be a good thing.
I haven't caught it yet. A review from a Singapore film website gave it 3 out of 5 stars. I haven't talked with anyone who's seen it, but it's being criticized like other recent big-budget epics from China -- a very beautiful surface with a lot of stars and action, but not really satisfying at the center. It's said there's considerable miscasting -- because the source is a classic novel, people have strong personal feelings about the historical figures' characters. This preconception must be extremely difficult for the actors to measure up to.
The bright side is that reviewers' opinions are only based on 1/2 of the whole film, so it's possible it could improve in the 2nd part.
I still plan to see it. It's just so cheap to see films here. :lol The action in the trailer is really extraordinary.
