Made-in-America China the worst of both worlds

August 1, 2008

Rosie DiManno

Chinese shoppers flock to the opening of Wal-Mart in Beijing on May 18, 2005.

Twenty-four billion cans of Coke were sold in China last year.

That's a cultural revolution.

Without a shot fired, the Middle Kingdom has been invaded, swamped by the West, gluttonous in its appetite for all things foreign and bourgeoisie, racing at warp speed toward a different kind of class conformity than that espoused by Chairman Mao – who's still dead, still on embalmed display, but increasingly a red-faced embarrassment to China un-bound.

Is this even a Communist country anymore?

Wouldn't know it, from the Pizza Guy and KFC outlets on almost every block in the capital, the world's biggest McDonald's franchise, the designer label shops that cater to a well-heeled clientele, the five-star hotels sprung up alongside ancient temples, the neon-lit nightclubs and the free-wheeling capitalism fuelling a heated economy.

No-logo advocates will decry the development but the swoosh of global branding – marketing imperialism – is vividly scrawled across the landscape: Put your corporate imprint here.

Blame, or credit, goes largely to the Olympics, the Games a hyper-torque for China reinventing itself, not as a reformed state of reasonable political morality – as many had hoped when Beijing was awarded the hosting gig seven years ago – but rather as a hybrid freak of ideology, retaining much of its totalitarian character while embracing the go-go avarice and consumerism of the West. The worst of both worlds, you might say.

Where Coke pioneered, other multinationals have followed, drawn by the lure of Olympic association and the sales potential in a population of 1.3 billion.

Even Pepsi, arch-competitor to Coca-Cola, went temporarily and symbolically red, switching from its own iconic blue can to a limited edition "Go Red for China" version, which must have been hard to swallow for boardroom traditionalists. There's no discretion among profiteers. The Games have long been mined, exploited by corporate carpetbaggers. But Beijing has set new records for sponsorship whoring. Sixty-three companies signed on for official affiliation, with plenty more – such as Nike and Pepsi – cut out of the "Olympic Family" yet seizing the Games by the coattails, mounting advertising campaigns that suggest a formal relationship where none actually exists.

Their brands might be kept out of Olympic facilities but their logos are omnipresent in Beijing, on billboards, in television commercials, and through personal contracts with high profile athletes or via product endorsements with national teams. Oodles of side deals have been made. Marketing analysts estimate that Olympic-related advertising, in-country, could reach as high as $6 billion this year.

Beijing looks like one big sandwich board, a bewildering kaleidoscope of pitches and promotions in a weird juxtaposition of East and West.

It's also dismaying, at least to a visitor who last passed this way in 2001, to see how bowdlerized the capital has become, gleaming and modernized, but denuded of its distinctiveness, homogenized into Anywhere, World. Times Square, just down the road from Tiananmen Square, might as well be a patch of New York City, with the gargantuan pixel advertising displays and the fast food courts, the Nike emporium and the mega-mall.

This is, essentially, a made-in-America China, where once – and still – so much of what was sold on the shelves in the United States was made-in-China and cheesy.

The payoff, at least for profit-hungry corporations, is assumed. However, deals made years ago may not have anticipated the possible blowback from an Olympics increasingly politicized and demonized by critics and human rights activists.

Their I-told-you-so's are ringing in the ears right now, with the International Olympic Committee outed this week for cutting a deal with Chinese authorities that permits the censoring of websites embarrassing to the regime.

Olympic officials described the content on those sites – mostly dissident commentary – as "pornographic."

The rest of us would simply call it free speech.

"They are doing something illegal or transmitting something illegal, based on Chinese laws," Sun Weide, communications vice-director of the

Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, said yesterday. "For instance, they are propagating this evil cult, Falun Gong."

Beneath the glitzy veneer, the dollar signs and the open-for-engagement rhetoric, China is still China.

It drinks Coke but it spews red bull.

Better journalism needed

I don't even know where to begin. Who is she to determine what is a "reformed state of political morality"? How exactly is China a "hybrid freak of ideology" just because Coke managed to pull off a lot of business in that country last year? I fail to see why Beijing's "weird juxtaposition of East and West" is such a bad thing. Perhaps Rosie would prefer China to always stay the same and never sell any western products to its people? Maybe we should beware having our own cultural revolution if we open one too many Chinese restaurants in Toronto. I find it rather entertaining, that as a journalist she would ask "a visitor who last passed this way in 2001" what they think of Beijing. Why not ask any of the 17 million inhabitants what they think of their city instead of one random person who happened to visit twice in the last decade? This article criticizes China for not having enough free speech, but this article is clearly an example of free speech gone bad.

RE: Jingoism Blinds You to Reality / Mind or Heart

Have you ever been to China? Do you known all the kids in China learn Norman Bethune in their primary school TEXTBOOK? Do you know how HERO image our Canadian are in majority of Chinese's eyes? in their MIND? and in their HEART? Do you know the friendly chinese people never use the same JUDGEMENT, CRITICAL and ARROGANT way to our Canadian and our government in their media? Do you think that's with HEART if we regard our friend as enemy? Do you know since 2007 China has been already our second biggest business partner and FREE business naturally benefits mutual sides? Do you know to attact and to undermine one of the biggest stakeholders in our circle, is just the same as to insult our family member stupidly. Frankly and honestly, Ms.Dimanno's article merely utters part of the story and only from her own MIND. It is definitely and completely not only superficial, but also so and so short-sighted. Obviously and sensationally, some people could have heart in lieu of MIND!

RE: More Coke please!

As you say all the people there are "starving" (billion) and people are treated "no better than animal", just go to China and the majority of Chinese people do not buy you at all! Chinese government never execute prisoner "FOR" their organs. Free trade is not only adopted by China, either only by Canada. As a matter of fact in North American, everyone of us benefit low cost China products, and we all benefit the biggest investment from China trade surplus, and why don't you mention that?! Do you know China just improved their death penalty system and moved closer to our western legal system for Evidence Proved Sentence? If Falun Gong wanted to overtake Canada government, we canadian and our government absolutely must not accept it! We canadian do not want to compare to someone else, we are just ourselves! Other people have the same right!

More Coke please!

China has become the factory of the world using a populace of starved slave labourers of nearly one billion to supply the consumers that we are -- because we want more Coke and toxic goods! This scenario in turn leads to job losses for the rest of the world, not to mention industrial amounts of unchecked pollution and total abuse of labourers. For example, the Falun Gong political prisoners who are forced to work long hours for no pay are treated no better than animals. And to top it all of, they are executed for their organs on demand. (Bloody Harvest Report). Do we even consider any of this before we buy anything? We cannot compare China to Canada.

China, Singapore and India

People criticize China for not being democratic, but Singapore is a perfect example of how Authoritarian State can provide its citizens with among the highest standards of living. I for one am perfectly willing to give up democracy in Canada, if we and benefit from the skyrocketing economy and advance civilization of Singapore. They don't have sever infrastructure problems Toronto has. The reason for choosing democracy is to raise the standard of living. With China's rapid growth mimicing their Asian counterparts in Japan\Korea\Singapore, theirs every reason to believe China will a bigger version of Singapore. As for India, democracy has stiffled development. In Canada, this ain't that big a deal, but since more people in India live in Poverty than in China, this is a big problem in India. When China becomes a powerhouse, and their standard of living is at Singapore's level, India will be watch in awe.

The American "dream" in China

The days of cheap labour in China are numbered.. They are not exactly aspiring for the European Dream of contentment and satisfaction; they are being taught the American Dream of consumption and want. Aspiring for the American Dream is not cheap, just ask Japan and Korea. Eventually a rising cost of living and higher fuel prices will negate China's cheap labour advantage. It's tragic China was taught the wrong way of building a modern society. The Scandanavians should have had the lead in teaching the Chinese how to build a modern city (with all their recycling, energy efficiency, urban planning, and better quality of life. Look south for where the American Dream leads: economic cycles of boom-bust, dependence on foreign imports for resources and products, and widespread bankruptcy from over-spending.

TO: Rosie DiManno: Don't lose China! The same COMPLAIN way we lost Iran in 1970s!

China has been already Free market economy with huge connection with Western world, and actually, the biggest stakeholder in Wall Street. Economic change is the FIRST step and the BASIC step, PLUS it will eventually lead to BETTER AND BETTER political change. It's still not PERFECT for many things there as we are ourselves here tho, HAVE you all KNOW and noticed what a big change in politics in China since 1976 Mao's time? Circumstantially, while we still try to influnce China and to work with China, be positive, stop pointing fingers to show off ourselves. As Ronald Reagan did on May 4th, 1984 L.A. Olympic Games, PLEASE open your arms, stand up and clap to China, and please shout out LOUDLY and OLYMPICLY to China: Great! Amazing! and WELCOME!

Arrogence

It always amazes me how smug and arrogent some Westerners can be about the developing world. It's like they want China to forever be a 19th century backwater with mud huts and ancient structures there for the West's benefit. Are Chinese people not allowed to have things that we in North America take for granted? They want better lives for themselves and their families. I know some of you don't like it, but capitalism is the way to a better life. If the elitists want a quaint, pre-industrial existance, they should buy land and live like that. But don't expect Chinese people to

Safty in the Olympic Games

A mask and a strong stomach should do the tricks for the air and food of Beijing. As for the Vancouver 2010 winter games, after reading that boulders could fall off from the sky enroute to Whistler and what happened to that poor young gentleman in the Greyhound bus in Manitoba, steel helmet and steel plated neck guard should be issued to everyone attending the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games!

Ease of on India. India is still Democracy

China is communist authoritarian and undemocratic country. On other hand India is Democratic country. The way today Canada is run by three loser parties we know democracy is is not cheap and fair. Also note Canada/UK/Us has supported Sikh terrorism against India. So people in Canada ranting against India cool off.

Is Canada...Coke?

I am sort of at a loss to what is the point of this article other than this "Rosie" writer seemingly lamenting China's economic success from some higher ground. There is nothing mentioned about China itself that is new news. And isn't Canada more Red Bull than Coke anyways?

Yet another appalling article

With the Beijing Olympics fast approaching, there has been NOTHING but negative, discriminative articles about not only China, but the Chinese culture as a whole. The Chinese culture is far from perfect, but the Western culture also has problems of its own. Articles such as this one are read by the mass public and such negative views and opinions on the Chinese culture are extremely insulting. Toronto is 'supposedly' a multi-cultural city which accepts different views and values... I fail to see that in this article. Ms. Dimanno, I hope that in the future, you would refrain from making such demeaning statements in your articles that address sensitive issues such as different cultures and societies, as many people, myself included are extremely offended by this.

Global $$$$

There is a big difference between building a country's infrastructure and the desire of people to buy things they never had access to... The so called globalization is all about money. Think about it. Do you think companies are going to China for what purpose? Improve Chinese quality of life? Mehh The funny thing about it is that companies are going there to make things cheaper for North Americans (cheap labour therefore cheaper goods). Now that China bombed nice place to drive Chinese ppl to buy stuff huh? No infra for cars? Toooo bad...government did not plan on it or did not have time to do it? Think about it. You reader for sure has been buying Chinese made stuff and you are not even aware of this...you are helping all companies you just criticized

If you prefer the 18th century China, you are welcome to visit historical sites or just rebuild your own house out of wood, don't expect China as a whole to sacrafice progress just to amuse you.

I want a coke !

A little more than a couple of months ago I was watching a news clip about this young fellow being rescued after having been trapped under a collapsed builing following the recent earth quake in China. The first words uttered out of his mouth was "I want a Coke!". All the rescuers yelled "Fetch him a coke!" One said softly, like a mother to a sick child, to him "We will get you a Coke". This is no propaganda film, but live TV. Not sponsored by Coca Cola. If the Chinese can accept western ideas so whole heartly, why can't it be vice versa. Report positively, please. It sells more.

What is the problem?

So: China has coke, pizza and KFC. We have loads of Chinese restaurants, and markets. What is the problem?

Worst of Both Worlds

I completely agree with Rosie's observation that the combination of a totalitarian regime with the avarice of consumerism has built a monster of a country. Other than China has any nation gained so much power, influence, and money in so short a time without softening its strong-armed and corrupt political and social attitudes?

Yes Rosi Demano, China is still Communist

On our China visit last year our guide cautioned us to not speak about anything political in Tainemen Square because plain clothes security people who speak many languages eves drop on conversations. It happend to us when our guide was talking to us, a single man came over to our group, listened for a while to our guide and then left.

Back to Canada, now !

With all the negative reports from China, it is no place for all your reporters. Send them all back to Canada immediately!!

Globalization out of control

Why do greedy corporations feel it's ok to spread their urban graffiti across unique landscapes? And why do countries fail to realize what beauty and uniqueness they're taking away from themselves by allowing it? Countries are defined by their people, culture, religion, but also in a huge part by their architectures and landscapes. What will the world look like 100 years from now at this rate?

Not My Coke

It's the new Coke flavour and sells dirt cheap. Of course they're selling. When it first hit the China market they were giving the pop away for a couple years until the public started to accept it. Not an immediate success but a process they had to do to get the sales now.

India not far behind

Interesting write up!! One should also take a look at India. The gross negligence towards poverty, extremely bad infrastructure, diseases springing up from all corners, and what have you not. But yes, the westernization is there, and guess where, in the attire, cuisine and fancy automobiles of people. But nonetheless you can’t enjoy any of these due to bad roads, pollution and irresponsible leaders. The lackadaisical attitude of the government is abhorring. Children dying due to encephalitides and the government makes no attempt to increase the vaccine production that cures it. You could compare it to a cave that’s newly painted. Where rarely do people follow the indigenous richness of Ayurveda, yoga and the teachings of the Upanishad. In fact, Yoga had to make a U turn from the west in order to return to India. Even then India has a long way to go before it even comes close to China in development.

Speechless cont'd...

Add a bit of positive stuff to your articles because this negative hailstorm is a turn-off. It honestly just sounds like western propaganda.

Speechless Again!

"China the worst of both worlds" Could you be anymore negative and insulting? You say that the city of Beijing looks like "Anywhere, World". This statement is so superficial and ridiculous like the rest of your article. Most massive cities in the world look like "Anywhere, world". It's called Globalization. Does Toronto look very different from any huge American city? Not even close. This article sounds like it was written by someone taking a 30- minute tour bus ride through Beijing. Read in between the lines. Get into the real stories of Beijing because this article was simply the fizz off of your "red bull".
