China won't commit to foreign aid teams
CHINA today refused to commit to accepting any further foreign rescue teams into the quake-stricken country, after it let in emergency workers from Japan to assist with aid efforts.
"We will, according to the actual situation and the receiving capability in the localities, give serious consideration to the request of foreign rescue teams," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters.
He was speaking in response to a question asking if and when China would accept more foreign rescuers.
Qin gave no further information on the issue.
China today announced it would finally accept rescue teams from Japan, three days after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Sichuan province and left more than 40,000 people dead or buried under rubble.
It had previously rejected any foreign offers of help.
Australian expertise was politely declined yesterday, and South Korean specialists were also rejected, even though China faces a race against time to find survivors.
"After the disastrous earthquake in Sichuan, many countries expressed their willingness to send rescue teams to assist the Chinese side's work of disaster relief," Qin said.
"The Chinese Government and the people express their deep gratitude to the sympathy and support given to us by those foreign countries and their people."
Asked why China had finally decided to allow Japanese rescuers in and no other foreign workers, Qin said Japan was near China, and therefore fast in providing the rescuers.
"We hope the rescue team can reach the disaster-affected area as soon as possible," he said.
China had so far received international aid worth more than $100 million and materials worth more than $10 million, Qin said.
He said the most pressing need for rescue efforts so far was medicine and health-related materials.
Tents, quilts, and convenience foods were also in demand, as was communication equipment such as satellite phones.
China has justified its refusal of foreign rescue teams by pointing to challenges in transport and communications in the quake-hit region.
