To Times' Jane Macartney: Stop ignoring Chinese People's Voice

To Times' Jane Macartney: Stop ignoring Chinese People's Voice

Dear Jane Macartney,
(or can I call you chinese name 马珍 http://news.xinhuanet.com/sports/2008-01/09/content_7389239.htm)

I am one of Chinese Netizen. Last night(Mar. 28), I happend to read you latest posts about Tibet on "Times Online", and I left my comments to you, but unfortunately seems they are not eligible to be shown on the site (at least till now). From your post, I know you're watching this forum. So I gonna leave my comments here to you, hope you will receive.

The first post I read from you is .It's quit intresting to see how the western correspondent like you react to people's flooding phone call in China. And then I left my first comment which  exactly 1000 characters.

"I am a chinese from China and find your post by google news. Sorry if people bothered your life, they are not meant to hurt you but just angry. I am one of the angry Chinese, too. I know you've been in China for quite a while (Yes, I searched your name on baidu and google), you should know how Chinese people are proud to hold the Olympic games in China to integrate with the world, and how people in China love their country. I was soooo disappointed about what the western news say after what happend in Tibet. I use google news to search China everyday and all news about China are negative and unjusted. How could you media say "punishing China" or "boycott Beijing games"
or  comparing it with Nazi Germany's Olympics? Who you think you guys are?
YOU DID insult China and Chinese people!!! Yes, you guys have the right to tell your side of story, but why no one jump out to say our side and most important when it's the truth?
STOP Ignoring Chinese people's voice. You already own them a sorry."

Your second report [/url] made me a little bit on fire. Chinese lies?? Lies what?? Seems your points are "quite welcomed" by your reader, well, according to the comments. They don't know China but seems they are so willing to "free Tibet", "boycott Olympic" and even more ridiculous "free Chinese people"?! OK, so left my second comment to show my voice as a Chinese people.

"I am from China. I respect you has your own story or opnion, but does any one of you hear or care our story? Check out it yourself,

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/china_lhasa_page.html
Don't tell me that china daily is blocked in your counrty.
How can you say they are not  terrorists?! They burn houses, kill Han Chinese and even Tibeten Chinese for human right?? I really can NOT understand!!
I've post my opinions and comments on many western websites, BBC, Times and MSNBC, but they never show up on the sites. WHY? Anyway, I will never stop!
Can anyone just Stop inoring Chinese people's voice?
Good luck Beijing, good luck China! "

Well that' was what I wanna say to you, and can you also answer my question?
You are so concerned about the comments on chinese website Sina.com regarding your company Times. Why don't you just show a little bit concern or even a little bit mercy on those young lives who burn to death in Tibet?
http://news.sina.com.cn/c/p/2008-03-21/093315195872.shtml

AND, could you let me know how my comments can be eligible on Times Online? Don't tell me I have to add the words like "anti-China". In that case, I would rather "remain silence" becasue I LOVE CHINA same as those billion people who living in this country. But WE will keep shouting, till the day world can finally hear our voice!

Sorry for my poor English if any, but I bet you can understand, as a western journalist. BTW, you were not that lucky to be the most hated woman in China. We don't hate you or any other western journalists, we just anti bias.

Best regards,
Your Chinese Reader

PS: You might be interested in who I am, again I just one of the Chinese Netizen WITH NO gov't backgound. I don't know why western media like to think all chinese people who can build website, speak English or even find News via google are working for gov't. How come?

How I became the most hated woman in China

I woke up today to find myself infamous. With great excitement, a Chinese friend called to tell me that I had become an overnight sensation. It would seem I am the most hated person in China today. Or at least in my persona as The Times correspondent.
It took but a moment to track down on the popular news website www.sina.com that The Times topped the list of the most commented news items in China. The number of pages already runs to 105. Comments exceed 11,335 – fairly high even by standards in a country where the Internet is the top forum for discussion – and the number is rising steadily.
I was able to watch, live, as new comments popped up all day. This should hardly have come as a surprise. My office telephone has been ringing off the hook with furious calls from Chinese enraged after the Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday said a Times commentary by Simon Barnes that compared the Beijing Olympics with Nazi Germany's 1936 Olympics was "an insult to the Chinese and world people".
One caller threatened death to Michael Portillo, author of a similar piece in The Sunday Times . Others reserved that fate for me. It is easy for someone in China to assume that I wrote the piece – after all The Times website is now blocked most of the time, thus making it rather hard to find out just how The Times has covered the unrest in Tibet that provoked this outburst of popular anger.
For that is what it appears to be. This does not look like some orchestrated hate campaign against The Times – although the Foreign Ministry and many local newspapers and websites have fuelled the fire with daily attacks and comments against the perceived bias of the Western media in their coverage of events in Tibet.
The stream of invective reflects a deep-felt nationalist pride that has the Olympics at its core. These games are, after all, for most Chinese a moment when they want to celebrate, with the world, their achievements in development and prosperity of the last three decades.
Many Chinese tell me in casual conversation that they believe that the Games will demonstrate that their country has finally emerged from its humiliation at the hands of Western powers during the 19th century.
Not a few comments take up the nationalist theme by reminding Britain of the damage it inflicted on China with the Opium Wars of the 19th century that forced open treaty ports to trade.
Many voice fury at the burning (by Britain and France) of the Yuan Ming Yuan – the Summer Palace of the Qing dynasty emperors. (Although they don't mention that the action was partly in retaliation for the murders of members of an international diplomatic delegation that included a Times correspondent.)
Others are less thoughtful. "Ban all journalists of the Times of England from reporting in China" or "Be aware, there will be a settling of accounts". Then there is "The Times is just a smaller and smaller newspaper" or, simply, "Abominable."
The Times is far from being the only Western media organisation to be accused of an anti-Chinese bias since the start of the Tibet unrest. Several German television and print media have been criticised, among others. The China Journalists Association has said some coverage "betrayed the basic principles of accuracy and objectivity".
The American television station CNN has come in for particular opprobrium. Indeed a university student has set up a special website, www.anti-cnn.com, devoted to showcasing misleading or incorrect use of photos. The Times features here too for an allegedly misleading photo caption. And a new phrase – "Don't be too CNN" – has entered the Chinese vocabulary to mean "don't ignore the truth."

Tibet monks storm shrine visit in daring protest over Chinese 'lies'
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article3630653.ece
Tibetan monks raging against China’s criticism of the Dalai Lama and state limits on their religious freedom defied government officials yesterday to storm a carefully orchestrated visit by foreign reporters to the capital of the restive Himalayan region.
The astonishing outburst by 30 to 40 monks, weeping and shouting as they stood in front of Chinese authorities and branded them as liars, marks one of the most significant signals of Tibetan resentment of Chinese rule and a huge embarrassment to the Government that organised the visit.
Robbie Barnett, a Tibet expert at Columbia University, said: “This is one of the most daring protests in recent Tibetan history. It must seem to the leadership like a rehearsal of their worst Olympic nightmare.”
The anti-Chinese unrest across Tibet has drawn worldwide attention to the region with less than five months to go before Beijing plays host to the Games, regarded as a celebration of the economic and social achievements of China.
An Associated Press reporter, Charles Hutzler, said one young monk among the group yelled: “Tibet is not free! Tibet is not free!” and then burst into tears. He described how the monks shattered plans to show the return of peace to Lhasa after deadly riots on March 14 in which 22 people died and hundreds of shops and offices were set on fire.
The monks rushed over to stop reporters from being taken into the inner sanctum of the Jokhang temple, the holiest shrine in Tibetan Buddhism in the heart of the capital, Lhasa. They were upset that a government administrator from the temple was recounting how Tibet had been a part of China for centuries.
The monks, most of them young, were agitated and seemed particularly anxious to convey that the Dalai Lama was in no way to blame for the recent violence. One said: “They want us to crush the Dalai Lama and that is not right.” Another added: “This has nothing to do with the Dalai Lama.”
China has renewed its vilification of the Tibetan temporal leader, who fled into exile after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, accusing him of orchestrating the riots in which hundreds of Tibetans rampaged through Lhasa, stabbing and beating ethnic Han Chinese. Tibetan exiles say that violence in Tibetan communities has left nearly 140 dead.
One member of the group of maroon-robed monks said: “They just don’t believe us. They think we will come out and cause havoc — smash, destroy, rob, burn. We didn’t do anything like that. They are falsely accusing us. We want freedom. They have detained lamas and normal people.”
They told the reporters, the first small group permitted to visit the troubled region since the riots, that they had not been allowed to leave the temple since the first non-violent demonstrations by monks from a temple on the edge of Lhasa on March 10.
Troops guarding the temple were removed the night before the visit. The monks were particularly incensed that the reporters were being escorted, they said, by Communist Party officials planted as monks.
Government officials said later that the monks would not be punished.
The outburst at the Jokhang is particularly unusual since the 120 or so monks who live there are among the most carefully watched of any Tibetan religious institution. The monks at the temple are believed to be the only ones in Tibet who receive a government stipend. Their reputation is not high in Lhasa, many of whose residents regard them as government employees who want a good salary.
One Tibetan resident told The Times how he happened to enter the temple just before the protest. The resident, who declined to be identified, said he had noticed that armed security guarding the temple had disappeared by yesterday morning. He saw men burning incense at two altars outside the temple and, recognising them as plain-clothes police, asked if he could enter the temple. One said: “Go in quickly. It’s open now.”
He made his way inside and was astonished to see a monk shouting and weeping in front of a group of foreigners. “I never expected that the Jokhang temple would have so many brave monks.”
The worshipper said that he was ordered to leave as soon as the monks began shouting. Temple officials said to him: “The temple is closed now. No more worship. Please leave.”
Later, the area around Jokhang was sealed off by People’s Armed Police wearing helmets and carrying shields. They refused to say why they were there. The only people allowed to enter the area were those who live in the narrow lanes around the temple.

Jane Macartney,

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/photo/2008-03/21/content_6557098.htm
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/china_lhasa_page.html

http://news.sina.com.cn/c/p/2008-03-21/093315195872.shtml

我看了这篇报道的全部,除了把59年叛乱叫uprising,以及“China has renewed its vilification of the Tibetan temporal leader"里的vilification外基本没有什么问题,没有捏造事实,也没有直接攻击咱们政府。

TOP

TOP
